Howard a legend of the beautiful game

It’s back to the bathing beauties this week in Looking Back, thanks to this photo from, I’d guess, the 1960s.

Brian Jenkins from the Midland Hotel, which is soon to celebrate its 80th birthday, kindly loaned us this one from the Super Swimming Stadium which shows Everton footballer and future manager Howard Kendall (third left) as one of the judges of the Miss Great Britain contest.

Also pictured is compere Bert Burrows, members of the local council and contestants. Brian thinks the gentleman in the kilt is a professional wrestler. Any ideas who?

Also with regards to last week’s talk of the ‘urban myth’ that Coco Chanel and Wallis Simpson did/didn’t stay at the hotel, I had a browse through Barry Guise’s book ‘The Midland Hotel: Morecambe’s White Hope’.

There is a section showing guest book signatures of celebrities who definitely did stay at the Midland, including Alma Cogan, Victor Silvester, Abbot and Costello, Al Read, Al Martino, Max Bygraves, Ronnie Hilton, Rowland Emmett and Tommy Trinder.
