THE lives of Morecambe lifeboat crew members were put at risk by a hoaxer on Saturday morning.
The inshore lifeboat launched a search in “difficult” conditions after a 999 caller told Liverpool Coastguard that a woman had been seen walking in the sea near the Battery Hotel at 3.15am.
The search lasted 40 minutes but police later tracked down the caller and discovered that it was a hoax.
RNLI helmsman James Donnell said: “This hoax call has used up vital resources which could have been better used elsewhere and this has put the volunteer lifeboat crew’s lives at risk searching in difficult weather conditions for a person who was never actually in trouble.”
HM Coastguard and the police helicopter also helped in the search.”
