The new playground, which is not yet open to the public, is situated next to the public toilets near the clock tower on Marine Road Central.

On Facebook Sylvia Toddington said: “I often go for a coffee at Costa on the front. Sometimes I like to relax and have a read of a good book and sometimes I love to just sit and gaze across the Bay to those wonderful hills. Why would someone want to put a cement mountain in the new children’s playground so that I no longer have that beautiful view?

“Perhaps residents should be asked about the view across the sea being compromised by this hideous monstrosity.”

Another Facebook user Jackie Bailiff said: “I wonder if they were told exactly what was coming their way. A children’s playground is one thing, that hideous heap is another! Gross.”

Coun Janice Hanson, Cabinet member with responsibility for economic regeneration, said: “The play area is not yet finished so to judge it in its unfinished state is premature.

“It will boast brand new equipment designed to give kids of all ages a fun, but challenging, experience.

“The centrepiece is a climbing dome and the area will also feature stainless steel tubes to provide children opportunities to express themselves with activities such as balancing, hanging, sliding and climbing.

“The whole area will be covered in artificial grass, including the mound which children will be able to use to climb, roll and slide using the stainless steel tubes.

“The challenge with building a play area on a seafront location is that traditional equipment can quickly corrode and be damaged by the elements.

“All of the equipment in the new play area is designed to be hard wearing in the exposed location.”
