Torrisholme Road is now fully open to traffic after the completion of the bridge section near the former Broadoak garden centre on Saturday.

Buses affected by the closure are now running as normal.

Meanwhile work on another bridge on the route, the 211-metre long Lune West Bridge, has been delayed due to bad weather.

Work began on the bridge, which will contain more than 2,300 tonnes of steelwork secured with around 55,000 bolts, in April.

But Andrew Langley, project manager with road builders Costain, said: “We have been suffering some delays to the bridge beam lifts on the Lune Bridge.

“The gusty wind conditions stop any lifts being carried out.

“We have also suffered some crane breakdowns and had to wait for parts to be shipped in from Europe.

“We are currently re-planning the works with Cleveland Bridge and there contractors and changing some of the methodologies to reduce the impact on further works and expect to be lifting again shortly.” One of the UK’s biggest mobile cranes has been used to lift the bridge girders into place. The four main girders each weigh around 160 tonnes and are over 70 metres long. Construction of the £124.5m road began in January 2014, with more than 1m cubic metres of earth being moved during the first year of work. It is due to open in summer 2016.
