The records kept on tumbling at the weekend as Heysham Atoms U11s finished the first half of the season with their 12th consecutive win, whilst recording their largest ever points tally.
The young Atoms side hosted Bank Quay Bulls and they ran out convincing 74-16 winners.
Captain Connor put his head down and ran in the opening try of the game after just two minutes, and he scored a second try soon after, which was a carbon copy of his first.
The Bulls pulled a try back but Kian spotted a quick gap and his pass to Ciaron went through to Luke who powered his way through six tackles to record his first try for the Atoms. A conversion from the reliable right foot of Nathan gave Heysham a 10-point lead.
Relative newcomers Christian and Alfie continue to impress and from the former’s quick tackle Hayden set Josiah free to run in a 70-yard score, which he duly converted.
Fancy footwork from Sam, and then Ciaron, allowed Josiah to weave through again and Kian’s conversion gave the Atoms a 22 point advantage.
Harvey’s and Hayden’s fierce tackling forced a knock on and Connor duly scooped up and secured his hat-trick on the stroke of half-time.
The Bulls came out charging at the restart and quickly doubled their score, exploiting a few gaps in the defensive line. However, the Atoms responded well with their best 20 minute period of the season so far.
Zach and Christian were having superb individual games and their teamwork allowed Ciaron to spin through several failed challenges to restore a healthy lead, extended by Tyler’s conversion.
Josiah then released the ball mid-tackle, Sam plucked it out of the air, sold Bank Quay his dummy, and put Heysham 30 points clear, which Ciaron converted. The try of the game followed as Connor passed down the line to Sam who looped a pass to Hayden to cut inside and run in under the posts. Sam’s conversion was quickly followed up by a try from Billy, as the ball was again played down the line to perfection, with Hayden’s conversion making it 56-12.
A temporary lapse allowed Bank Quay to score a consolation try but the Atoms hit back again when Josiah unselfishly freed Harvey to go over.
Tyler then brushed off several tackles, held his feet and then ran in a magnificent first ever try, Christian’s conversion were his first points for the Under 11s. There was still time for both Ciaron and Josiah to run in quick scores before the end of what was an all-round winning team performance.
*Heysham Atoms U9s got back to winning ways with a 44-28 victory over Blackbrook Blues in a game reduced to 7-a-side due to the Atoms only having seven players available.
Ben put Atoms ahead, but the Blues hit back with two tries of their own before a lovely passing move was finished off by Dillon.
Oliver then used his strength to score a try, taking three of the Blackbrook defenders with him, but the visitors pulled another try back and then their half back powered over to score another.
Matthew was next on the scoresheet for the Atoms, and from the restart Dillon used his pace to score the Atoms’ fifth try. Ben then sprinted the whole length of the pitch to score, but Blackbrook hit back with two tries of their own, although Dillon scored yet again soon after.
Blackbrook scored their seventh try but two more tries from Dillon and two from Ben wrapped the game up.
Meanwhile, the Atoms’ U7s and U6s took part in a mini tournament, with the U7s drawing their first game with Hindpool Tigers U7s 16-16.
They then beat Chorley Panthers 24-16 while the U6s beat Hindpool Tigers U6s 36-28 in the final game.
