Help catch up on fishing memories in Morecambe

Susannah Bleakley of Morecambe Bay Partnership said: “Morecambe Bay has a unique and fascinating fishing heritage but, sadly, the stories of the communities involved in the industry are being lost with the passage of time.

“Volunteers are the key to collecting as much material as possible to preserve these precious stories for future generations by interviewing those with memories of fishing in the bay. Full training is provided so if you have a little time to spare, love heritage and are interested in hearing eye-witness stories about life around the bay then we’d love to hear from you.

“We also want to hear from anyone who has memories or experiences of fishing around the bay. Have you fished? Did your parents or grandparents? Did you pick shrimps or pot them? Did you marry a fisherman and have a few tales to tell? We value all your memories, however large or small, and would love to speak to you.”

The Partnership is running an informal drop in event to tell people more about the project. So come and share a free coffee, learn more about the joy of oral history or share your personal fishing heritage with us.

The drop in will be at Grange-over-Sands Oral History Drop-in on Saturday January 30 from 10am-12noon. It will be held at the ‘S’ Café (opposite the park), Yewbarrow Terrace, Grange-over-Sands, LA11 6ED.
