A new consultant cardiologist has been appointed at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust.

Dr Sasalu Deepak has begun work, based at Royal Lancaster Infirmary but is also conducting clinics at Ulverston Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness.

He also carries out work at Blackpool Teaching Hospital, the local tertiary centre for cardiac patients, ensuring that where possible local patients receive a continuation of the care they receive under the same consultant.

After graduating from Mysore in India, Dr Deepak became a house officer in the Western isles in Scotland. He completed his higher medical training in the North West.

George Nasmyth, Medical Director for University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This appointment should be lessen the need for the service to rely on locum doctors and mean that local patients can have continuity of care. “
