Two-year-old children in the Lancaster and Morecambe district could be eligible for free child care.

New funding of nearly £27m over two years means that up to 20% of all two year-olds are getting free early education and child care.

The move is aimed at helping children from less well-off backgrounds get a good start in life.

Parents can contact Lancashire County Council’s Family Information Service (FIS) to see if they qualify, as there are still places available.

Just go to www.lancashire.gov.uk/childcare then follow the links. Alternatively ring FIS on 0800 195 0137 or email them on lancsfis@lancashire.gov.uk .

Those eligible include parents or guardians on income support or income-based job seekers’ allowance, income-related employment or support allowance or child tax credit if annual income is less than £16,190 and others. Eligible children can get up to 570 free hours of childcare per year up to a maximum of 15 hours a week over at least 38 weeks per year.
