She said: “It was great to be able to visit the dig where only this morning a well dating back to at least medieval and possibly Roman times was found, a discovery that will greatly enhance understanding of the history of Lancaster and that offers the hope of preserved items from the wet well base.

“It’s a reminder of the extensive, exciting history of Lancaster, which enriches the life of the city and offers great possibilities for the development of tourism.

“I’m proud that the Lancaster Green Party has been at the forefront of efforts to protect and support the under-threat museums and artistic and cultural history of the city. These are essential to its residents but also to the economic opportunities of tourism that could be further developed.

“I hope that the discovery today will act as a reminder of the need for governments to protect and enhance our cultural heritage - all too often now under threat in the age of the failed policy of austerity and cuts.

“And if the well does turn out to be Roman, as some on the dig expect, it’s a reminder of Lancaster, and Britain’s, long European heritage, of long links with the Continent and an extensive, continuous history of migration and emigration.”
