Met Office forecasters have issued a yellow warning of ice for the North West, following this weekend’s wintry weather.

The warning is due to come into force at 11pm on Sunday, and last until 11am on Monday.

Experts say a mix of rain, sleet and snow will spread eastwards overnight, with patches of snow possible over higher ground.

However, they say the main hazard is likely to be ice, “as the precipitation falls onto sub-zero surfaces”.

A message on the Met Office website said: “Please be aware of the potential for tricky winter driving conditions.”

The chief forecaster said: “A complex set of frontal systems will be pushing areas of precipitation into Scotland and parts of northern England.

Surfaces will be below zero, so this means the risk of ice, as well as localised smaller amounts of snowfall.

“Precipitation should tend to fade away again during Monday.”
