A fishing boat was reported missing and having engine trouble during the wintery weekend in Morecambe.
Morecambe’s volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew launched to search for the boat at around 4.20pm on Saturday January 16.
Liverpool Coastguard requested the Morecambe RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew to provide support to Fleetwood’s all-weather lifeboat in searching for a fishing boat that had been reported as having engine trouble.
As there was no known location of the vessel other than it was in Morecambe Bay and it was snowing, with rapidly fading light, the inshore rescue hovercraft searched the shoreline from the Stone Jetty to Heysham harbour while the inshore lifeboat proceeded to search further offshore towards the Fleetwood area.
At 5pm the missing boat was located by Fleetwood lifeboat crew, approximately two miles out from Fleetwood, and escorted the vessel to the shelter of the Wyre estuary.
Morecambe’s volunteer crew was then stood down and both craft returned to station.
Kevin Jackson, Morecambe RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, said: “The conditions made the search very difficult so we are glad that the missing vessel was quickly found safe and well.”
