THREE men from the Lancaster district are to go on trial accused of posting Facebook messages which encouraged rioting or looting during the August riots.

Karl Manley, 28, of Goldfinch Close, Heysham, and Stefan Johnson, 21, of Greenfield Street, Lancaster, appeared at Preston Crown Court this morning.

They pleaded not guilty to encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence, believing it would be committed.

They will be tried jointly at Lancaster Crown Court on February 6 next year.

Warren Calvert, 19, of Kingsway, Heysham, and Christopher Schofield, 26, of Nelson, denied assisting or encouraging rioting or violent disorder.

Calvert will go on trial at Preston Crown Court on February 2, while Schofield will face trial at Lancaster on February 13.
