STAR, which stands for ‘Start Treatment And Recover’, is a new group led by people who have already recovered from drug and alcohol problems.

It encourages people to connect with the five ways to wellbeing – a set of evidence-based actions developed by the New Economics Foundation which promotes wellbeing.

The group hosts positive and fun activity evenings at CRI Inspire recovery service at Bellfield House in Morecambe.

The activities include meditation, board games, quizzes, BBQs on the beach, sports, a book club, a film club, Wii tournaments, football team and Xbox connect competitions.

Each activity is open to everybody in the local community who is seeking support for drug and alcohol problems.

Michael Greenfield, STAR Recovery Champion said: “Our STAR evenings grew from a desire within our service user involvement group to build a community spirit within the service before taking it out to the wider community.

“It is exciting to see how STAR has grown and how it has helped to change people’s lives.

“Members often tell me how much it has helped them to move forward in their recovery.”

Bert, who has been supported by CRI Inspire, said: “The STAR group is so enjoyable and I am very glad that I have found a group where I can kick back and relax.

“It runs around people who are undergoing treatment for addiction and also those who have been through it.”

STAR takes place every Thursday evening between 6pm and 9pm at Bellfield House in Morecambe.
