Estate agent and Morecambe FC director David Robinson dies, aged 62

David Robinson, who was also a director at Morecambe FC, died peacefully on July 1 in Royal Preston Hospital.

David grew up locally as one of five siblings, attending Lancaster Royal Grammar School.

He was heavily involved in property in the area, having trained as an estate agent at Pye Wilson after leaving school, becoming partner before they sold out to Nationwide.

His father and uncles also owned a building firm, A. Robinson and Sons, which, as well as building a number of estates in Morecambe, was responsible for building the main stand at Morecambe FC’s former home, Christie Park.

After Pye Wilson was sold, David and his business partner Gary Middlebrook built Crowther and Merewood Homes together, who again built a number of new estates in the area and all over the north west before selling out to Persimmon on 2004.

More recently David ran Lancastrian Estates (formally Cumbrian Properties).

David had a love of all sport especially football and in his younger years played for Morecambe FC. More recently he became a director of the club.

A statement from Morecambe FC said: “The club is saddened to hear about the death of director David Robinson.

“David, who has had two stints as a director with the club, sadly passed away on Friday.

“He first joined the board of directors in 1996 and rejoined in 2004.

“As well as being a director with the club and a successful local businessman David played some games for the Shrimps in his earlier years and had great links with the club as his family was involved in the building of the main stand at Christie Park in the 1960s.”

Shrimps’ chairman Peter McGuigan said: “David was a true gentleman who served the club with distinction.

“He has been an integral member of the board for a number of years and been a great servant to the club.

“He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his family.”

Through his various businesses David supported a lot of local causes, particularly with the sponsorship of sporting teams such as Morecambe FC and the Vale of Lune Rugby Club.

David leaves a wife, Deborah, and five children, Ben, Tom, Vikki, Kelly and Thomas.

He was also father-in-law to Tracy, the much-loved grandad of Jamie and Josh and brother of Dorothy, Elizabeth, Peter and the late June.

His son Ben said: “The most important thing to him was not success but family and friends, which is proven by the number of wishes we have had over the past few days.”

David’s funeral service will take place in St John’s Church, Sandylands, on Tuesday July 12 at 2.30pm, followed by committal at Lancaster & Morecambe Crematorium.
