Vacant seats in the John O’Gaunt and Carnforth and Millhead wards on Lancaster City Council will be contested, as will the Lancaster East seat on Lancashire County Council.

Meanwhile the Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner elections will also take place.

The John O’Gaunt and Lancaster East seats are vacant following the death of Labour councillor Richard Newman-Thompson in February.

The Carnforth and Millhead seat is vacant after the death of Conservative councillor George Askew in February.

Forty elections will take place across England and Wales to determine the Police and Crime Commissioners who hold the police force to account, preside over police budgets, aim to cut crime and ensure local policing is effective.

These elections will be made using the “supplementary vote” system where voters can rank two candidates in order of preference. Turnout for the Police and Crime Commissioner elections is expected to be low nationwide. Results are expected on Friday.
