IT is always amazing to me how many people suffer with irritable bowel but think it is something that they just have to learn to live with.
In my consultations I will often ask people what else is wrong with them, apart from the concern that brought them to see me in the first place.
Many people will say that there is nothing else the matter but when I start questioning bowel habits, bloating and indigestion, they will say: “Oh, well, I do have irritable bowel but there’s nothing I can really do about that!”
Irritable bowel tends to be what I call a blanket diagnosis – it covers a lot of different symptoms. Different people will suffer different problems, but still come under the heading irritable bowel.
Therefore, over the next few weeks, I am going to have a look at the different ways that irritable bowel can manifest itself and try and give some possible ways of helping to improve each one.
