Dinosaur unveiling kicks of Light Up Lancaster festival

D is for Dinosaur sculpture which will be appearing at Light Up Lancaster

The colourful sculpture will be unveiled for the first time in the UK at the festival this week.

Brought to you by Lancaster Arts City, Lancaster City Council and Lancaster BID, the festival is now in its fourth year and takes place on Friday November 4-5.

This year’s event celebrates the city’s rich cultural heritage with an arts trail for all the family through the city centre on the Friday and culminating in the annual fireworks spectacular on Saturday night.

The festival also welcomes local, national and international artists including art trails, illuminations and interactive pieces.

One of those pieces is the ‘D is for Dinoasaur’ sculpture which takes inspiration from the Falla festival in Valencia, designed to be displayed publicly and burnt to celebrate St Joseph’s Day.

It forms part of a collaboration between local artists Sue and Pete Flowers of Green Close in Melling, and Spanish artist Mario Gual del Olmo, a fallero artist from Valencia.

“We wanted to see if we could make a meaningful collaborative project with Spanish artists here in our home town of Lancaster,” said Sue Flowers.

The sculpture will be unveiled in Dalton Square on Friday November 4 from 5pm-9pm and burnt at the Freehold Community bonfire on November 5 at 7pm.

On Saturday during the day there will be activities for all the family, from walks to workshops plus tours of the castle and lantern making. Then in the evening, watch the Lancaster Fireworks Spectacular launched from the top of Lancaster Castle. Wristbands to watch the fireworks from Quay Meadow and Giant Axe have sold out, but you can go to the official viewing areas at Williamson Park and Salt Ayre Sports Centre.
