The demolition of the old Visitor building is getting under way this week.
New owners Galloway’s Society for the Blind said workers would be on site to begin knocking down the Victoria Street premises.
All of the back extensions will be knocked down, leaving just the front section formerly used as the reception and upstairs offices.
Galloway’s Society for the Blind bought the 19th Century building in 2013 and want to part re-build, part-convert it into an £1m facility for local blind and visually impaired people.
The Visitor and Lancaster Guardian newspapers moved to a new office on Northgate, White Lund, in 2014.
Preparatory work is under way this week and demolition proper should begin in two weeks’ time.
The demolition team is expected to be on site until May 2016.
The original date given for the start of demolition was October 19.
