A KEY decision maker on funding for the town’s festivals in 2012 has admitted she only attended “one or two” of the Top 20 events in Morecambe this year.

But Coun June Ashworth, chair of Morecambe Town Council’s festivals and events committee, defended her team’s spending proposals for next year.

Coun Ashworth said plans for £65,000 to be spent on 24 festivals, plus £20,000 towards the Seaside Festival and the return of the Red Arrows, whose visit in September was called off due to high winds, were “fair to everyone”.

Still, event organisers are up in arms over the proposals, saying funding shortfalls could rip the heart out of the festivals season and force key events to be cancelled.

Top promoter Steve Middlesbrough, brains behind the concept which saw 20 consecutive weekends of festivals this summer, has suspended his 16 events scheduled for 2012 because his £48,000 grant could be slashed by half.
