GARDENING columnist Les Foden has paid tribute to his eldest son, Andy, known as the Gentle Giant, who has died suddenly at the age of 47.

Les, who has written a column for The Visitor for many years, said his son passed away doing what he loves, playing darts.

Andrew was born at Sharoe Green Hospital, Preston, on March 20, 1964. He was the first born, followed by a brother Paul and then twin sisters Wendy and Linda.

Going to school at St Thomas’ and Garstang High, he became a keen footballer, and got the nickname “Gentle Giant”, going on to play for many local teams.

The family went on fishing holidays, which led Andrew to go on and fish at competition level, winning a few.

Towards the end of his time at high school, he developed an interest in cars and mechanics. He spent many hours with friends taking the engine out of his Ford Escort, and putting it back together.
