David Morris column

In last week’s Visitor there was an article regarding Morecambe Foodbank.

If you would like to read the full details of the story I have placed an open letter to the Trussell Trust on my website.

This letter can be accessed at www.davidmorris.org.uk.

On Tuesday I was proud to welcome three business leaders from Morecambe and Lunesdale to a reception hosted by the Chancellor at Number 11 Downing Street.

Russell Edmondson from F Edmondson and Son, Craig Smith from Shp and Lee Wyatt from Maine Entertainments all attended the reception as the Northern Powerhouse is targeted at the transport, technology and tourism industries.

The businessmen were able to tell the Chancellor that his vision of a northern powerhouse was well under way in Morecambe with the new M6 Link road which will increase business contracts and business capacity.

In Transport Questions on Thursday I was able to raise my idea of a transport tunnel under Morecambe Bay.

I have already met with the Cabinet Office and the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership to secure cabinet office funding for a feasibility study for the tunnel and in transport questions on Thursday Transport Minister John Hayes MP said he was interested in the project and would meet with me in the Department of Transport to discuss the idea further.

This tunnel is really capturing the minds of those in the Department of Transport and I believe that it could be a reality in the next 10 years.

The latest unemployment figures were released from the Office of National Statistics, the number of people who are unemployed in Morecambe and Lunesdale has fallen again year on year by 446 people.

That is 446 people who are now in gainful employment.

It is especially good news that the number of young people who are unemployed has also fallen by 130.
