Last week, I was invited onto the BBC’s flagship daily political programme Daily Politics to talk about the new European Union Beach Water Directive.

When it is implemented next year the directive will make regulation twice as strict as it currently is.

Here in Morecambe, our two designated swimming areas Morecambe North and Morecambe South have both passed and actually the most recent tests in June show that the standard of water is higher than required.

This legislation does have the potential to desimate our tourism industry, my worry is that people will take heed of these warnings and stop coming to British coastal towns as a result.

This will decimate our tourism industry, in the same way quotas have already ruined our fishing industry.

This is European interference taken to a whole new level.

This year people will swim in these waters without any problems at all but next year they will be warned they are dangerous. The water itself will be no different, the only thing that’s changed is that the EU has started meddling.

Next year marks the 800th anniversary of King John signing the Magna Carta in 1215 at Runnymede. For those who are not aware, I am a member of the political and constitutional reform committee. We are currently consulting on a Magna Carta style written constitution which, if implemented, would modernise our political system in this country.

Currently, we have an unwritten constitution based on laws and so-called conventions of Parliament such as the Ministerial Code.

Should you wish to participate in the consultation you can take a look at the Select Committee website. http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees.

Please look out for my survey which I have been distributing it all over the constituency. If you haven’t received your copy yet, please call James on 01524 411059 and he will send you one. The survey is also available online just take a look atwww.letdavidknow.co.uk and rest assured I read every single response.
