MORECAMBE’S Venus and Cupid sculpture is set to be dismantled on Valentine’s Day next year.
Artist Shane Johnstone has vowed to take down the sculpture after Morecambe Town Council voted against buying it at a meeting last Thursday.
Lancaster City Council is happy to extend the licence, which expired in the summer, but Mr Johnstone feels the deal would be unfair, as he would be responsible for the insurance and upkeep.
He said: “For six years I have answered every query, I have reduced the selling price to less than it cost me the build the thing in the first place.
“Heartbreaking as it is, it seems now is the time to move on.
“I would just like to thank the hundreds of people who have expressed their support. Unless the councillors themselves have a change of heart then the breakers will move in on St Valentine’s Day.”
