A shop worker has spoken of the terrifying moment he was confronted by knife-wielding robbers who demanded money from the till.

The shop assistant, who doesn’t wish to be named, was working alone at O’Connors Convenience Store on Balmoral Road when two men wearing balaclavas burst in with 12-inch knives and said, “Give me the money”.

He said: “They just came behind the counter and had large knives. They took all the cash in the till, and also coins underneath the till, as well as helping themselves to cigarettes.

“I didn’t really notice if they had accents because they didn’t really say much except ,‘Give me the money’.

“I’ve only been here three weeks as I came to Morecambe from London to help my cousin run the shop.

“All the customers are nice and it is a really quiet area so I’m surprised it has happened.

“I went back to work the day after which is the best thing to do.

“I think they waited until they knew I was on my own before they came in.”

Police said the two men fled in the direction of St John’s Avenue after stealing cash and cigarettes at the store.

The first robber is described as tall, slim, wearing a dark jacket with a small blue logo on the top left breast, light grey tracksuit bottoms and white and black trainers.

The second robber is tall, slim, wearing a dark jacket with a reflective strip around the back of the hood and a light logo on the top left breast. The robbery happened at 7.23pm on Sunday, February 22.
