A serial killer currently on death row in California is a former pupil of Bentham Grammar School near Lancaster.
Charles Ng, who lived in Longton, near Preston, is currently awaiting execution by lethal injection on death row in California after butchering two baby boys, six men and three women in 1983.
It is 16 years ago since Ng was convicted of murdering 11 people in a death and torture spree in America with the help of accomplice Leonard Lake.
Ng is being held at California’s San Quentin prison.
True crime serial killer novels are bestsellers all over the world, with millions sold.
Here is a list of my top five serial killer novels, definitely only for adults, and definitely not for the squeamish!
1) The Final Truth: The Autobiography of a serial killer by Donald Gaskins and Wilton Earle, with an introduction by Colin Wilson.
Author Wilton Earle spent countless hours interviewing Donald ‘Pee Wee Gaskins’ in prison on death row after he was convicted of killing an inmate by blowing him up. The resulting novel is the life story of a sadistic, evil serial killer without remorse. From his first coastal kill in 1969 to what he calls his more serious murders (killing victims he knew), this is Gaskins’ own uncensored account of his disturbing crimes and the reasons for committing them. The descriptions in Gaskins’ own words of his crimes are probably the most bone chilling I have ever read.
2) The Killer Department by Robert Cullen.
This novel details the crimes and investigation of the horrific crimes of Soviet serial killer Andrei Chikatilo nicknamed the Butcher of Rostov, the Red Ripper, and the Rostov Ripper, who committed the sexual assault, murder and mutilation of a minimum of 52 women and children between 1978 and 1990 in Russia and Ukraine. Chikatilo confessed to a total of 56 murders and was tried for 53 of these killings in April 1992. He was convicted and sentenced to death for 52 of these murders in October 1992 and subsequently executed in February 1994. Cullen book is a riveting read and again, not for the faint hearted!
3) Die for Me by Don Lasseter.
This is the true story of the Charles Ng and Leonard Lake torture murders (see above) which doesn’t pull any punches and is a gripping account of the lead-up to the murders, the murders themselves and the subsequent trial. This is a book that is hard to put down.
4) Dracula Killer by Lt Ray Biondi and Walt Hecox.
This is an account of the killing spree of Richard Chase in Sacramento in California in the late 1970s. Written by the lead detective on the case, it is a gruesome account of the ‘Dracula Killer’s’ crimes which terrorised the local community. Chase killed six people in a span of a month. He was nicknamed “The Vampire of Sacramento” because he drank his victims’ blood and cannibalized their remains.
5)The Night Stalker by Philip Carlo.
This superb true crime novel details the crimes of the infamous ‘Night Stalker’, another California serial killer, who raped, murdered and mutilated his victims without compunction. Richard Ramirez was eventually convicted of numerous murders and was handed thirteen death sentences. He died in 2013 of B-cell lymphoma whilst awaiting execution on death row in California. Author Philip Carlo died in 2010.
