A woman staggered bleeding and terrified in search of help after she and her partner were repeatedly stabbed in a knife attack at a caravan park.
Police launched a murder inquiry after bus driver Adam Stirrup, 28, died of the injuries sustained at the Stud Farm Holiday Park in Heysham in the early hours of Sunday morning.
His partner, former Morecambe High School pupil Katrina Rudrum, 26,was in a stable condition in hospital on Tuesday morning.
Covered in blood and despite her injuries, she had managed to walk down the road in the dark to a neighbour’s caravan and ask for help before collapsing.
The neighbour, a former soldier, treated the woman for her stab wounds until emergency services arrived.
He had tears in his eyes as he told The Visitor: “I’m an ex-soldier and I’ve served in Northern Ireland. I’ve seen shootings and bombings but nothing as bad as this. I just hope she’s alright.”
Adam, a driver for Stagecoach based at their depot in Lancaster, was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital where, despite doctors efforts to save him, he died of his injuries.
Another caravan owner paid tribute to him.
She said: “He was a lovely lad, what’s happened is terrible.”
The incident happened at 12.45am on Sunday at the quiet, largely residential and very well kept, caravan park off Oxcliffe Road.
Police were called by the ambulance service to reports that a 26-year-old woman had been stabbed.
Upon arrival officers discovered Katrina suffering from serious stab wounds to the neck, abdomen and back.
Adam was found nearby also suffering from significant stab wounds.
Both were taken by ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital.
Katrina was then transferred to Royal Blackburn Hospital where she was initially in a critical condition. Today, Tuesday, police said her condition had improved and was now serious but stable.
Detective Superintendent Paul Withers from the Force Major Investigation Team said: “This is a rare and appalling incident whereby a young man has lost his life and a young woman remains in hospital fighting for her life.
“An investigation is underway into the circumstances of exactly what has happened but I’d appeal to anybody that is staying at the caravan park or lives in the immediate vicinity that heard any commotion or witnessed any part of the incident to contact police. Officers working on the inquiry are searching for the knife that they believe was used in the attack but this remains outstanding at this time.”
Anyone with information should call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
