Morecambe scaffolder first to be given 'sobriety tag' by court

A 23-year-old scaffolder is thought to be the first person to be fitted with a “sobriety tag” by a judge.

Aiden Lund will have to wear the tag for 28 days and every half hour it will monitor his skin to see whether he has been drinking.

Lund, of Maylands Square, Morecambe, admitted being in public with a Zombie –style knife in the town’s Morecambe Road.

When arrested he said he was carrying it for his own protection from a man from Manchester, District Judge Jane Goodwin heard at Blackpool Magistrates Court.

Sentencing him to wear the monitor for a 28 –day period the judge also gave Lund a 26- ofweek jail term suspended for as year and 20 days rehabilitation.

The court heard that the alcohol monitor punishment became available to the courts this week.

The judge told Lund:”If this tag detects alcohol on you you will be in breach and will be brought back to court and will service the 26 weeks imprisonment.

David Leach, defending, said his client would consent to the fitting of the monitor.

The tag scheme has been in operation across Wales since October but its roll-out in England was delayed from last year.
