Thomas Lloyd, 33, of Slaidburn Drive, Lancaster, appeared before Preston Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to a charge of abandoning property on a highway, on land in the open air.

The incident relates to April 23 this year, when Lloyd went to an area of Church Road, Kirkham, near Preston, which is owned by Network Rail.

The court heard he abandoned a hoard of rubbish consisting of a tree, bricks and rubble, plastic sheeting and other household items.

The bench ordered him to pay compensation of £200 to Network rail, as well as a £200 fine, a £34 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

The case comes after the Post revealed lockdown had brought a ‘huge increase’ in fly tipping to Woodland Nature sites in Lancashire.

And last November, official figures, released by Defra, revealed the true scale of fly-tipping in Preston, and the fact that most people get away with it.

Of the 2,821 reports lodged with Preston Council in 2018, the authority was only able to send warning letters to people in four cases.

In one case, rotting carcasses of pigs were dumped in Poynster Street off Ribbleton Lane, Preston.
