Hot poker murderer jailed for 30 years

A SADISTIC torturer who murdered his love rival has been jailed for 30 years.

Gary Speight, 31, who was originally from Lancaster, killed Anthony Bates using a number of implements including a red hot poker, a skewer and a broom handle.

Speight, who went to St Wilfrid’s Primary School in Halton and Ripley St Thomas School in Lancaster, also stamped on Mr Bates’ skull and poured molten syrup over his head when he discovered he had been sleeping with his girlfriend while he was in jail.
