A hitch-hiker was attacked with a piece of wood while trying to thumb a lift at an M6 service station.

Police said a car pulled over on the northbound exit sliproad at Burton Services, between Carnforth and Kendal, before a man got out and launched his assault.

It happened at around 1.20pm on Friday, February 14.

The victim was taken to Westmorland General Hospital with bruises and swelling to his arm and his leg.

No description of the vehicle involved was released but police asked anyone with information to contact them on 101.
