Tiernan Darnton, 20, of The Promenade, Morecambe, appeared for a preliminary hearing at Preston Crown Court, but entered no plea to the allegation.

He is accused of the murder of 94-year-old Mary Gregory, of Levens Drive, Heysham, in May 2018.

It was originally believed she had died accidentally after her home caught fire due to a discarded cigarette end, but a police investigation resumed in 2019 when detectives received vital new information.

Judge Simon Medland QC set a provisional date of November 3 for his trial and a further case management hearing will take place on May 28.
