A Heysham-based haulage company has been forced to improve security after it was hit by the rising tide of fuel thefts.
HMT Shipping estimates that it has lost £10,000 over the past eighteen months because of diesel thefts, including one in which 5,000 litres of fuel was taken from its yard in Middleton Road.
The firm’s trucks have also had fuel taken while parked up overnight.
CCTV footage of one incident showed thieves breaking the lock on the fuel tank and siphoning fuel into drums. Using a battery-powered device on sale in army surplus stores, the thieves drained the fuel from four lorries in 40 minutes.
