Burglar back behind bars

A prolific criminal who served a sentence for burgling his neighbour’s flat is back in prison after the Court of Appeal ruled his original term “unduly lenient”.

Mark Anthony Gray, 44, already had convictions for 128 offences to his name when he burgled his neighbour’s home in Meldon Grange, Heysham, last November.

He pleaded guilty to burglary and was jailed for eight months at Preston Crown Court in February.

The solicitor general, Oliver Heald QC, applied for the sentence to be increased.

And Gray is back behind bars again after three of the country’s top judges increased the “lenient” sentence to two years and five months.

Lord Justice Treacy said there was nothing exceptional about Gray’s case to justify such a short sentence.

The court heard he sneaked into his neighbour’s flat while she was visiting a friend in the block on the night of November 4, 2013.
