Couple rescued from high tide in Overton

Morecambe’s RNLI Inshore Lifeboat and Hovercraft launched after being contacted by a man and a lady using their mobile phone stating they had become stranded by the tide on Sunday December 13.

Crews responded quickly and both the lifeboat and the hovercraft were launched just after 11.30am.

The man and lady, from Lancaster, were located approximately halfway across the access road between Overton and Sunderland Point totally surrounded by the incoming tide.

The hovercraft was used to transport the rescued couple to safety.

The couple drove and parked their car at Overton and decided to go on a walk along the access road to Sunderland Point, which is about a mile long, not realising how fast the incoming tide can quickly cover the road. Most days of the year the road is covered by the tide twice a day.

Morecambe RNLI volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager, Kevin Jackson, said: “The man and lady did the right thing by using their mobile phone to call the coastguard once they realised they were cut off by the incoming tide.

“This enabled Morecambe’s RNLI crews to respond quickly to the emergency situation and rescue them just before they became engulfed by the sea.

“Afterwards they felt slightly embarrassed by the situation they had found themselves in but they had no need to, the RNLI are more than happy to respond to this type of emergency in the knowledge that the couple are now safe and sound.”
