Football fans have the chance to help raise £50,000 for a new Morecambe and Wise attraction.
Money from the sale of commemorative rosettes at this Saturday’s Morecambe v Luton match will go towards the ‘Morecambe Gets Wise’ campaign for a new bronze piece of wall art depicting the comedy duo – backed by The Visitor and Morecambe FC.
There will be a party atmosphere at the match, as the Hatters and the Shrimps were Eric’s two favourite football teams. Sculptor Graham Ibbeson has created a special Eric Morecambe Trophy to be awarded to the winning team.
Fans have been encouraged to dress up as Eric Morecambe and there will be a fun penalty shoot-out between rival supporters who are wearing Eric and Ernie-themed clothes.
Mark Dixon, general manager at Morecambe FC, said: “We’re delighted to have this opportunity to honour the great man. There’s always been a friendly rivalry between Morecambe and Luton and we’re both absolutely respectful of what he means to a nation of comedy fans. We want to do anything we can to help the fundraising and get the bronze tribute to Eric and Ernie into the town.”
Mr Dixon said if the League Two match ends in a draw, the trophy could be shared or there will be an on-day agreement between the two clubs as to how the cup winner is decided.
