Prosecuting, John Woodward said: “The main witness has been an on off partner with the defendant for 12 months and has known her three years.

“The defendant has moved on and has another girlfriend.

“ The victim declares her love for the defendant and says she doesn’t want to support a prosecution but feels she needs help with her mental heath.

“It occurred in the late morning of July 16.

Laura Brennan received some text messages from the defendant and they seem to have had a squabble calling each other names, and it culminated, at 1pm, in the two meeting near a Spar shop in Lancaster.

“The defendant had the two bars, one in each hand. Laura Brennan laughed at her and that caused the defendant to snap.

“A witness said she hit her in a frenzied attack about two or three times around the head.

“That caused a cut to her forehead and some swelling to her right eye socket.”

Defending, Fraser Livesey said: “The nature of the weapons on paper sound pretty awful but they aren’t what they appear.

“The complainant, if described as such, is entirely correct - this defendant needs help.”

The judge, Recorder R Shaw, said: “I appreciate the relationship has come to an end, but whatever the rights and wrongs there’s no excuse in meeting up with her late at night and bashing her over the head with those hollow chair legs.”
