Festive shoppers are being encouraged to visit Lancaster’s independent retailers as part of Small Business Saturday today.

At least 20 companies across the city and district have signed up to the nationwide event which aims to champion local businesses.

They will run promotions and offers throughout the day.

The city council has also offered new start-ups and budding entrepreneurs free pitches at the region’s markets.

Those selling new products, including Celtic blankets, stone carvings, iced cakes, sugar modelling and Made in Wray wooden products, hand-made board games, giant posters and Christmas wreaths, are not being charged to have a pitch.

Existing traders plan to mark the day with a range of offers and discounts for customers.

Coun Janice Hanson, cabinet member with responsibility for economic regeneration, said: “Small businesses play an important part in our local economy, so this initiative is a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on them and help them thrive.

“We have a wealth of small, independently-owned businesses in the district and we hope everyone will really get behind the scheme and give them the support they deserve.”
