FESTIVAL market traders are angry about city council plans to stop them paying stall rents with cash and cheques.

From May 1, traders will not be able to pay by cash or cheque at the market office, and will have to find alternative payment methods.

Lancaster City Council says it is part of a bid to become a “cashless authority” but market traders have branded the move as “stupid”.

Alan Greenhalgh, who has been a market trader for 15 years, said: “We go to pay rent at the office and there’s never been a problem.

“It has been said that the only thing in Morecambe to make any money is the market.

“I just think the city council are being so inflexible.”
