POLITICAL leaders are proposing to close Lancaster’s market by the end of next year – and it could cost the taxpayer at least £13m.

Heads of the Labour, Green, Conservative and Independent groups on Lancaster City Council want council officers to negotiate a terms of a lease surrender with Lancaster Market’s landlord, and enter talks with traders for early surrender of their tenancy agreements.

Should councillors agree to the plans, to be discussed at a meeting at Morecambe Town Hall at 2.10pm on Wednesday, then traders could be relocated to new trading premises, and/or compensated by the end of 2012.
