A woman from Morecambe has been awarded the British Empire Medal.
The investiture of Brenda Flanagan was made by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire, Rodney Swarbrick.
His wife, Diana, read the citation.
The ceremony was held in the day hospital at St John’s Hospice watched by patients, staff and family members.
The citation recognised Brenda’s 30 years commitment to St. John’s Hospice including Chairman of the Friends’ Group and a member of the Board of Trustees on which she continues to serve.
It also recognised Brenda’s work with the International Ostomy Association of which she served as World President.
In particular she worked with developing countries helping to improve the quality of life for those who had undergone stoma surgery.
Brenda is continuing with this work in Romania. Services to the local community include the founding of the Stroke Club, the cardiac support group Heart Concern and Headway.
Brenda is President-elect of the Lancaster Soroptimist International Club which acts as a global voice for women building a better world for women.
