BOXING will return to Morecambe’s Winter Gardens for the first time in 48 years.

A night of “white collar” semi-professional boxing will take place on Saturday, September 1 at the old theatre.

Boxing was a regular occurrence in the old theatre prior to its closure in 1977.

According to Larry Braysher’s book ‘Boxing by the Sea’, the Winter Gardens hosted its first fight night on April 4 1928 and its last on June 9 1964.

Owners the Winter Gardens Preservation Trust currently have a licence to open the theatre for a limited number of events per year.

“We’re thrilled to bits about it,” said Evelyn Archer, chair of the trust.

“It’s another use for the building and another group of people coming in to use it.”

Local fight promoter Frank Harrington, of Coastal Boxing Promotions, has also recently opened a new boxing gym and community centre in the former Future Windows premises on West End Road.

Anyone interested in joining can call Frank on 07789 261768.
