Prosecuting, Charlie Brown said: “When he saw him on this occasion on June 15, the defendant stopped his car next to him and spoke to him, offering to sell hash.

“He got into the vehicle in order to check further what the defendant was offering him. They drove around a corner into what the man knew was a dead end and where he hoped there would be potential witnesses. At this point he raised the previous transaction.”

The court heard an argument broke out and the man threatened to call police. The pair started fighting and Perkins said: “I’ve got a knife, I’ll stab you”.

Police arrived and saw them “wrestling” over the handbrake.

An officer noticed some herbal material in the back of the car and members of public handed a plastic bag to police.

The court heard the shaven haired pensioner, said “One is a bag of herbs, one is henna for my hair”.

He was arrested for offering to supply drugs, though none of the material was found to be a controlled drug.

Imposing a two year conditional discharge Judge Andrew Woolman said: “In reality it is an attempted deception. This is a highly unusual case.”
