Police are warning homeowners with external post boxes to beware after a number of houses were targeted by conmen.
Morecambe area police have issued a warning on their Facebook page saying:”We would like to alert our resident’s especially those with external wall mounted style post boxes.
“We believe that individuals are targeting households without door letter boxes and who have wall mounted ones.
“These letterboxes are not in all cases secure as individuals can insert their hand into the post box and pull out the letters.
“One possible outcome is that details are then obtained from the mail allowing the criminal to apply for a credit card in the name of the occupant.
“Once they receive the card and the pin number they then use the card to make purchases.
“The householder is only alerted to this crime when they begin to receive credit card bills.
“In order to try and reduce the risk of the theft of mail if you have an external post box it should have an internal restrictor bar that prevents criminals from being able to get their hand into the post slot.”
