Tenants from Morecambe have won a Carer of the Year award.

Margaret and Peter Whelan, who live at Anchor’s Monkswood Avenue in Bare, were nominated by their neighbour Judith Brooks for tirelessly caring for others.

More than 600 nominations were sent in for Anchor’s Happy Living Awards for those who live with Anchor who is England’s largest not-for-profit care and housing provider.

The awards were launched in May 2014 with six categories: Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Silver Surfer, Best Grandparent, Community Champion and Carer of the Year.

Mr and Mrs Whelan, who have lived at Monkswood Avenue for nearly 20 years, are thrilled to receive the award.

Mr Whelan said: “We are over the moon to have been nominated by Judith.

“I like to help those who are less able as I would hope others would do the same when I am less able.”

Neighbour Judith Brooks, who is thankful for the help Mr and Mrs Whelan give to her, said: “Margaret and Peter deserve to win because they always take time to help older residents on our estate.

“They go well beyond any ordinary neighbour – they are very bright stars in our community.”
