The shop has been hit by delays this year, having been expected to open initially at Easter and then in June.

But bosses say it should now open in the autumn, and new employees have already reportedly been offered positions at the chain store from September.

Primark will open in the former indoor market building in Marketgate.

Around 125 positions at the store were advertised through Lancaster Jobcentre last month.

The jobcentre worked closely with Primark, running group sessions with applicants to improve their skills.

It was originally hoped that the 50,000 square foot store would open in 2015, but this was delayed after the contractor working on the site went into administration.

Lancaster-based contractor Askam Civil Engineeringtook over, preparing the retail space for Primark to fit out the store.

A spokesman for Primark this week said: “Primark confirms that it plans on opening in Lancaster in autumn 2016.”

The development of the new Primark represents the first phase of improvement work by Roubaix Group at Marketgate since the company bought the shopping centre in September 2014.
