St Peter’s Church of England Primary School, a thriving school serving Heysham, is in significant need of modernisation.

And funding has now been secured through Blackburn Diocese for the first phase of a long-term building project.

The first phase – costing around £170,000 – will see the interior of the majority of our older building being refurbished to create three new classrooms and corridors.

Keeping the historical look of the building is a key feature of the design, which blends the traditional buildings with twenty-first century facilities.

Local building companies will be used to improve the learning environment for the children with new furnishing and brand new IT systems.

Children at the school will be involved in naming their new classes and putting their ideas forward to buy exciting new classroom resources.

Later phases of the refit will include relocating the school offices and entrance, which will improve safeguarding security for the children.

The Early Years area will also be relocated to make full use of the school’s extensive natural outdoor area.

A working party of parents, staff, children and governors will be set up to consider ways to improve the school’s outdoor areas to complement the indoor improvements.

The work is expected to cost a total of around £750,000.

Head Nicola Gomersall said the building work will help secure St Peter’s for current and future generations of pupils.

“We are so pleased to have secured this first phase of funding,” she said.

“Our children deserve the absolute best learning environment possible and this will be a fantastic start for them.

“A big thank you to our governors and staff who have worked behind the scenes for 12 months to get to this point.

“We can’t wait to start seeing the improvements happen and can look forward to the grand opening of these three classrooms this September!”
