With lockdown lifting, a lot of motorcyclists are starting to take advantage of the longer summer days to get out and about on the Lancashire roads again.

After months restricted to short journeys or none at all, responsible riders know how important it is to ensure their skills are up to speed.

With traffic patterns changed by lockdown, police report a 71% spike in the number of speeding drivers recorded compared to normal. Advanced training can equip the motorcyclist to spot hazards, react quicker, take appropriate action, and maintain a higher level of control, making them much safer and more confident on the road.

All perfect timing for a scheme available through Morecambe Bay Estuaries Advanced Motorcyclists (MBEAM), part of the UK’s largest independent road safety charity. In association with Cumbria Road Safety Partnership, they are offering motorcyclists cashback on an advanced riding course, designed to support, refresh and improve road skills.

Motorcyclists taking the Institute of Advanced Motorist’s (IAM) accredited Advanced Motorcycle Rider Training through MBEAM can qualify on completion, for £40 cash back. Initially based around postcodes beginning LA, riders living further afield can also apply: perfect for anyone who comes over to the Morecambe Bay area to ride or work.

The courses are individually tailored to each rider, comprising a minimum of six coaching sessions at times to suit, with an IAM observer leading up to a test, all conducted locally.

MBEAM chairman Rudy Rengers said; “Everyone can become a safer and more skilful rider though a course like this, which refines skills, increases awareness and anticipation, and awards you a national qualification that most insurers reward with lower premiums. More efficient riding even reduces wear and tear, meaning fewer repairs and bills!”

MBEAM, who also organise their own regular club rides, road and track skill sessions, trips, tours and socials, have seen an increase in enquiries over recent weeks, especially from women.

Rudy adds; “Biking is wonderful for physical and mental wellbeing. It’s low impact, and allows people to be sociable while remaining naturally socially distanced. You wouldn’t get back on your bike without checking it was in top condition, and most people’s skillsets can benefit from a similar MOT. These incentives make it the perfect time to think seriously about advanced rider training.”
