The tale of everyone’s favourite orphan is this year’s musical choice by the Morecambe Amateurs.
‘Annie’ starts at the Grand Theatre in Lancaster tonight for a five-night run (June 24-28) with the lead role being played by the granddaughter of one of Morecambe’s best known entertainment personalities.
Kate Bowskill, granddaughter of Joyce Warrington MBE, made her stage debut at the tender age of two.
This is her fourth production with the Morecambe Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (MAODS) having also played Brigitta in The Sound of Music.
Joyce, who won the Visitor Sunshine Award in 2012 for services to local entertainment, is former director and choreographer and now chairman of MAODS.
Kate performs on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening performances. Marianne Bardgett from Warton takes the part of Annie on Tuesday, Thursday and also the Saturday matinee.
Also included in the team of orphans is Lottie Pye, daughter of Sarah Pye (nee Morrell, who played the part of Annie herself in 1985, great granddaughter of Eddie Morrell who managed the Central Pier for many years putting on the Starlight Show. Lottie played the part of Gretel in The Sound of Music.
Taking the part of Oliver Warbucks is stage stalwart Bryan Wood while Sarah Hicks, who played the child loving Maria in The Sound of Music, shows off her versatility by playing child hating Miss Hannigan!
