Out with the old and in with the new

A commemorative postcard to mark the last horse-drawn tramway in the country.

Here are two photos harking back to the era of the tram in Morecambe.

The first petrol tram in the country was used between the Battery and the Strawberry Garden, starting on April 11 1912. Back then, the Strawberry Gardens was an early ‘pick your own’ market garden which once stood where the pub and shops are now, on the crest of the hill.

The second photo is a commemorative postcard to mark the passing of the last horse-drawn tramway in the country.

Only Douglas in the Isle of Man continued with horses, now a tourist attraction.

The date of its demise was October 21 1926 and the last tram was driven by 71-year-old Jack Birch, who also drove the first tram in May 1887.

Thanks to David Hodgson for the details and pictures.
