Madame Butterfly, by Puccini, will be presented by the opera group on Saturday September 12.

Madame Butterfly is the story of Cio Cio San - the ‘Madame Butterfly’ of the title - the Nagasaki geisha girl, who falls for and marries Lt Pinkerton of the US Navy.

Very soon after the wedding, Pinkerton sails off into the sunset, leaving behind Cio Cio San and her maid, Suzuki, to pick up the pieces.

Butterfly waits patiently, hoping that ‘one fine day’ he will return.

At last, Pinkerton’s ship is sighted on the horizon.

However, there will be no happy ending for Madame Butterfly.

This most famous of operas contains many beautiful moments, including possibly the most famous soprano aria in all opera – ‘Un Bel Di’ – (One Fine Day).
